Appy Friday ~ Listen Close Articulation by Erik X. Raj

How good is your memory?  How good is your articulation?  Can you combine the two?  Yep!

Do you remember that lovely 1980's game called Simon?  Red - Green - Green - Blue - Yellow - etc.!  Well, Erik Raj has combined this concept with Articulation practice and whamo!  Listen Close is here!  Here's how it goes down...

This colorful screen welcomes you to this app.  There are commonly misarticulated sounds ready for you in every position and blends!  This app is a collection of 600 (no typo there!) sound-specific words for articulation practice.  And the huge bonus is... it is totally UN-boring!  This app has quickly become a favorite of my older artic students.  

 Simply choose a sound and then a position (or mixed which is an awesome addition!)

Students are then shown the words that will be given in their Listen Close challenge.  If you don't like the words for some reason, simply hit "try new words" and a new set will be given.  To return home press the "house" button in the bottom of the screen.  Press "play the game now" to begin.

 There will be a countdown and then you will see the mouth of a child open.  They will say a word and you will repeat the sequence.  Each time, a new word is added to the sequence and the student must remember the string of kids and words.  I have my students repeat the word after they tap the child.

When you make a mistake, you are shown your score and the High Score.  We typically get 5-7 "rounds" in which is at least 15-28 reps per game.  It's highly engaging and very motivating for the students.  This is also a great app to recommend to parents who may want to do to practice at home.  It's very motivating and the whole family can participate and the student can easily complete the task on their own.

So, overall, this is one of my favorite artic apps!  Let's be honest, I've totally loved the other apps (I Dare You Articulation and Multiple Choice Articulation) from Erik Raj that I have been able to review.  They really spice up the droll task of Articulation therapy.  They are excellent for RtI work, quick and easy to use, and affordable for families.   Here is a quick run-down of Pros/Improvements:

Pros:

• Insanely motivating.
• Great for older students who have "done it all".
• Inexpensive - $4.99!
• Colorful.
• 600 sound-specific words.
• "Mixed" words option is great.
• Perfect for use/extra practice at home.

Improvements:

• A built-in data collection method would be sweet.
